About the tour
A day on the plateau with a reindeer herd is a fantastic way to get up close and personal with the semi-nomadic life of the reindeer herding Sami. You will have the opportunity to participate in their everyday life as shepherds.
Reindeer herding involves controlling the herd and getting them to graze. The herder must be able to predict the animals' movements based on their knowledge of the reindeer's natural behaviour in different seasons.
In virtually untouched Norwegian nature, you'll get to experience reindeer up close and be served traditional Sami food in a lavvo.
The weather can vary from bitterly cold to glorious sunshine, making this experience truly special. This means you'll need to be well dressed for the trip.
When you come down from the mountain, you will be served a traditional Sami meal at our restaurant. In cosy surroundings you will be served dinner dishes made from reindeer and local ingredients.
This experience can be customised according to the customer's wishes. Please contact us for more information.
Practical information
The tour lasts 8 hours including transport. You meet up at Sami Siida in Øvre Alta. From here, you will be transported by car into the plateau to Kautokeino municipality. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. From here you will be transported by snowmobile to the reindeer herd. This trip lasts about 15 minutes. If you have a snowmobile driving licence, you can drive yourself. Return down from the mountain at 15.00. Arrival in Alta at 17.00. Dinner is served after arrival.
This is an outdoor activity. In winter, it can be cold in Kautokeino with minus 40 degrees in winter, so you need to dress for the weather. We recommend woollen underwear, good shoes, a woollen sweater, a good warm hat and mittens. We have overalls that guests can borrow.
